Imagine human heart and mind as gardens which, instead of flowers, have grown weeds and thorns. Now visualize negative qualities such as anger, hatred, greed, envy, or worry as these weeds and thorns. Over time, disciplined reading of scripture and contemplation on its application to our daily lives could help us gradually replace these thorns, weeds, and thistles with beautiful flowers of love, mercy, faith, generosity, and so on. For some of us, this could prove to be a long process which requires much discipline, patience, devotion, and steadfastness, but the reward is invaluable:

“Be like a well-cultivated garden where the roses and variegated flowers of heaven are growing in fragrance and beauty.” – ‘Abdu’l-Baha

Daily reading and contemplation on the Word of God gradually leads to spiritual transformation:

“Every verse which this Pen hath revealed is a bright and shining portal that discloseth the glories of a saintly and pious life, of pure and stainless deeds.” – Baha’u’llah

Study and reflection on the Word of God can bring transformation to our characters and help us achieve a more stable life and a more peaceful mind:

“Peace of mind is gained by the centering of the spiritual consciousness on the Prophet of God; therefore you should study the spiritual Teachings, and receive the Water of Life from the Holy Utterances. Then by translating these high ideals into action, your entire character will be changed, and your mind will not only find peace, but your entire being will find joy and enthusiasm.”

From a letter written on behalf of Shoghi Effendi to an individual Baha’i, October 15, 1952
